Need A Change?

Hebrews 10:24-25 (24) And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, (25 )not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

The Bible has many verses dealing with gathering together as a church. It is a God recommended activity. It was a very common Sunday morning affair, but has become less true in our current culture. So many choices of things to do online, sports, etc., compete for this time slot now. Many Christians don’t attend regularly, and of course, nonbelievers have no reason to attend. Church membership has now fallen below 50% for the U.S., with many Americans citing no religious affiliation. But why is this so? The world seems so much more chaotic and restless today than in the past. Why have we turned away from the Church?

Maybe the verse above holds some of the answers. If church sermons are in “church speak” instead of common everyday language, then it becomes difficult to apply the lessons to our situation. Jesus used “parables” to illustrate spiritual truths. He wanted us to “get it” and practice these truths in our daily living. Likewise, do we encounter love and encouragement when we interact with our church family? If not, these faults alone would spur most folks out the door!

No church is perfect but we should try harder to win folks back and give nonbelievers a reason to listen to us. On the whole, the U.S. remains a religious nation. People want to believe. All you need to do is watch the news to recognize that culture seems to be going off the rails. Maybe it’s time to try again, to find a church that loves more like Jesus does. A church that encourages and spurs your heart to do good. If not our church, located in St. George, KS, then maybe another church that would provide you with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Yes it’s time for a change.
